Tybee Tiki

While crossing Lazaretto Creek I noticed a abeautiful opportunity for a picture. The Cockspur Lighthouse and a shrimp boat headed out for the day. So I took a left before the Pink Flamingo.…..you know the one.

Down that road was also a really nice Tiki Hut up on “stilts”. I queried a couple folks on a Golf Cart and they told me all about it. Sister company to The Local Shrimpers, Tiki originally started as a place to gather after Dolphin Tours.

They now are going full time bar.

I expect this place to expand rapidly.

Did I mention the view!!??

I’m SO excited to see this business grow

Learn to surf in a day on Tybee Island is not as hard as you think.

Meet Sushi, part fish, part surfer all squished into a 3 mil wetsuit topped with a capped coif. He's impossible to miss on the beach. You will hear his shouts and whistles of enthusiastic support for his aspiring and advanced clients yearning to learn to surf.

Back from his winter routine of snow skiing the globe. Sushi is so down to earth he's on the periodic table of elements. His voice carries only laughter and joy and his smile can cast a shadow on the sun.

I value this friendship. He is an ambassador to the ocean. He gives to it as much as it gives to him. Sushi is Surfing.

Sushi was born in Tokyo, lived in Hawaii and now splits his time between surf lessons and soccer lessons during the season.

A surfer since age 17, Sushi knows the water, the wind and the board. Taught and inspired by the generations that preceded him, he's eager to pass down his knowledge.

He worships just spending time with his family, friends and those he loves.

If you want to learn how to enjoy life through learning how to surf. Join the many who have been privileged to work with such a salient person.

Man.....I only have a day to spend on Tybee, there's 4 people in my group age 5 to 75. What do I do!?

Bridges, Lighthouses, Dolphins, beaches, AWESOME fun music, all comically narrated by experienced, resident sea......people??? Sea persons? Captains.

One of my newest adventures on Tybee was a Dolphin Tour. It's the most shockingly surprisingly jampacked fun on the island I've had so far. And I’ve been coming here for 7 years. The bonus features peg the fun meter.

HUC-A-POO‘S BITES AND BOOZE

A Kentucky Derby Story

I think it’s named after a winning horse at the Derby. I’ma ask aroun next time I go.

Was talking restaurants with a woman at Tybee Pier parking lot. She got me thinking of Huc - A - Poo's! I hadn't been in a while.

So off I went. The crunch of the gravel parking lot is a welcome sound that blends well with the orchestra of cicada's. A spot in the shade is hard to come by on the island. Huc's had plenty of parking under a canopy of Palm Trees and Mossy Oaks.

Having learned from ordering food in Savannah and Tybee, the portions are very generous. So... I started with a single slice of sausage.

when it showed up, I felt like when Fred Flinstone goes through the drive thru and the ribs tip his car over. That's a SLICE!!

Well.....I did finish it! It wasn't hard. The crust was not too thick not too thin, very cheesy, but not too much. Sauce quantity was perfect, as were the sausages.

I try not to wear white shirts when I eat pizza but this would have been fine.

Lots of space outside. Super Americana. The decor seems to be made of things you can use from a sharks stomach. Street signs and hippos and all sorts of cool stuff.

The eye is never bored at Huc - A - Poo's.

ZUNZIBAR

There's also one in downtown Savannah at

Over the last couple of years, I watched this property thinking what a great spot. Lots of visibility and on a corner lot.

Zunzibar branched out into Tybee! Tons of plants. White painted woodwork glowing in the sun and corrugated metal roofing panels accent Zunzibars casually eclectic feel.

The food is off the charts delicious! I had the Conquistador with both sauces and a side of HOME MADE chips!

Great conversation with some folks I met at the beach.

The owner came out and welcomed me. The bar tender is super cool and attentive to the care of his patrons. Constantly scanning the room for empty cups.

That level of attention was present at Zunzibar. And it was effortless for them. Innate. I see that more and more when dining out.

Come for the food. Stay for the people.

Tybee Oaks Shopping District

Nestled into the majestic Mossy Oaks and fragrant pines are a grouping of pastel marvels that collectively elected to share the basic to eclectic in this artists colorful commune.

Start your Christmas shopping early or find yourself that unique accessory to remember your trip to Tybee by.

Lining the access road like Easter eggs in a basket, these she sheds under tree dreds are filled with one of a kinds. (OAKs).

There is a place to buy clothing from a local designer. A place to paint pottery. And even a place to buy books. If you’re looking to spice up your food, there’s a shack with hot sauces.

THE SURFING GOAT on Tybrissa

Fresh perfectly toasted bagels, enough bacon for a chunk in every bite, fresh egg and cheddah!

Iced coffee was excellent and the staff was all smiles. Loooooong breakfast bar with fun music and a TV playing surfing content. Billy Strings is a house favorite along with the legendary Gerry Garcia.

This bagel was delicious! Can't wait to go back.

DOC’S BAR

(912)786-3627

(Last I heard you can do takeout)

DOC'S BAR

Welcome to Doc's Bar. I met the previous owner last year at a fashion and design network studio in downtown off River street. She was such a sweet woman I had to come visit and see for myself. In my haste for their featured meal I missed the menu....where there's usually the story of the restaurant. But I believe it's the oldest bar on Tybee. And featured in many movies.

It reminds me of some of my favorite places on Cape Cod and the islands. Lots of varnished wood, cool signs and eclectic memorabilia in every nook.

The steak and cheese was awesome! Perfect size. But to add to that....the French fries. Just the absolute best!!! This really made an impression. 50% of the meal is often one side. And some places forget to maintain the same quality of the side, as they do for the main course. Doc's Bar and Grille nailed it. And again....the waitstaff, mixologist, bar tender manager was multitasking with nothing less than a smile and laughter.

Great spot!

T S Chu ‘s Department Store

(912)786-4561

TS Chu’s. What a great story of sacrifice and success. Chu came to acquire his first store as a gift for his kindness to a stranger. His family’s success story is a Tybee legacy.

The store offers goods for residents and tourists. Hundreds of Tee shirts and decorations. But also supplies for plumbing, electrical and HVAC service or repair.

A generous helping of cheap conveniently located beach necessities.

I LOVE this new sitting area. Not a square inch of their property is wasted.

Sting Ray’s

(912)786-0209

I finally got a moment to stop at Sting Rays. This is a GREAT spot. All dressed up and ready for any celebration on the calendar! Right on the parade route. And what beats St. Pattys day on the beach!? The smell of fresh seafood is all over this boat to table restaurant. While looking over the menu, I was glad to be recommended the blackened redfish by my dining consultant(aka Jillian...). Jillian also offered new and best deal drinks. I had lemonade and iced tea.

The sandwhich was hot. The lettuce, tomato and onion were cold. The home made sauce was an excellent addition to an already nicely seasoned fish.

Good music, laughter filled atmosphere and SO convenient to downtown Tybee. And miss Jillian brought the hospitality.

Sea Kayak Georgia of Tybee

(912)786-8732

After 5 years of looking across the river to Little Tybee Island, I finally called Sea Kayak Georgia and booked the trip I’ve been dying to do.

Last night was like Christmas. I went to bed at 8. set my alarm for 7 woke up at 5 too excited to wait.

The drive across the causeway is gorgeous in the rising sun. The light flickers through the palms, nature’s venetian blinds. Egrets, gulls, hawks and herons begin their morning runs, dining In the abundance of the marine life sheltered by the marsh. Herds of fiddler crabs run for the cover of the wind blown blades.

Squadrons of Pelicans pass overhead like formed up fighters of WWII.

Telephone poles cast long geometric shadows, like an architects blue prints crossing the road.

I pull into Alley 3. And stuff all my things into my dry sack. The thick plastic see through Ari Bag is a perfect little pouch for a day trip in a 12 foot Perception Kayak.

Marsha is our paddle instructor, lifeguard and tour guide. And she excels in all three.

It is a *perfect* day on Tybee. 80 degrees 8kt wind and a 2kt current going out.

Our flotilla buckles up, bails out and splashes in.

An awesome discussion on the natural purpose of marshes, the qualifications of a barrier island and the critters that live on it.

We paddle through the driftwood and land on Little Tybee an hour later. It’s better than I thought.

Inaccessible by power boat, this treasure is a dream for naturalists. Little Tybee is protected by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The silence is broken only by the sounds of waves crashing on a distant sand bar, and the chirping of a few local birds.

This yet another stunning backdrop for photography.

Its impossible to appreciate through a photo. So scroll up, call and book your trip.

Bring more water than you think you need. Whether you exert yourself or not, the Georgia wind and sun is a moisture hungry beast.

Thanks to Sea Kayak Georgia and Paddle Tybee. Thanks to Marsha and my whole group. We had an awesome day.

Im definitely going again *soon*.

THE CRAB SHACK

912.786.9857

I love this place. You will never(and I've looked) see another place like this. This is 100% coastal Georgia dining. You can see alligators and exotic birds.

It's very one with the natural surroundings. Working with the environment, its bamboo and barn wood decor, creates a relaxing setting. The palm trees and mossy oaks embrace this place...as a part of the marsh itself .

"Where the Elite Eat in Their Bare Feet" is a perfect description of the their setting. Don't be scared by the elite part. There's plenty on the menu for those of us on a budget and tons of choices on the kids menu. Nothing like this place exists. Make it a don't miss.

Their menu is online .

And they're located just outside the main island. Plenty of parking available.

NORTH BEACH Bar and Grille

(912)786-4442

Located right at the parking lot of North Beach. Tons of parking. Change and Bathrooms.

Walk 50 yards from from the bar and you're on the beach. 20 yards from out door dining area is the Tybee Island Aquarium.

30 yards from the indoor dining area and bar, is the Tybee Historic Light House.

Today I stopped in after a charity walk I'm doing. I love this place any time of year. In the middle of summer it's just extra special.

Jacob hooked me up with a bottomless Diet Coke. Had the Chicken Tortilla Salad appropriately accompanied with a corn, black bean, onion and tomato pico with Citrus Dressing. Cold and refreshing on a 90°F day!

Washed it down with a Limey cheesecake white chocolate goodness.

Easily one of my top 5 choices for lunch or dinner on Tybee.

North Beach Bar and Grille is great for a cold one and a few apps or a full blown meal for 8. They have a great location and a very cool atmosphere.

(912)786-4442

Curbside Pickup is avail as well.

FANNIES

(912)786-6109

Fannies! You gotta sit at the Bar at Fannies. The bar stools are classic!

There's also what I recently thought of as the stairway to heaven. It's on the left side of the building and goes to the upper deck the view is awesome. Same menu, and bathrooms right on the same floor. It's outdoor dining, in the shade with ceiling fans and fun music.

A frequent stop as their pizza is delicious. Desert and a side this time. Onion Rings and Key Lime Pie.

The service there is very fast. And the food is great. Jillian was the best. Gave me a great seat with a view and kept my beverage full.

Fannies has one of the best restaurant t-shirts in town. "WTF" welcome to Fannies! :)

CHAMACOS TACOS AND SURF

(912)472-4057

I love Chamacos Tacos. They used to be further down. But now they're perfectly located between North Beach and the Main Beach. Maybe Closer to North Beach.

Cool vibe. Just like their last location they have Cornhole and some outside seating. More of their own parking at this one.

Surfboards, new and used are available there.

Fresh fish tacos and a coke and I was on my way in minutes. Cool bar to sit at or grab a table.

The Rock House

Seafood, Specialty Burgers, Bar and Blues Club

(912)786-7176

Take Out

I finally made it to The Rock House. After a long ride on the beach and out to the boat ramp, I treated myself to the iconic speak easy on the corner of Butler and Tybrissa.

I LOVE this place. You can't miss it. Big neon lights on both streets. Their sister company is Pier 16.

They don't call it a Bar and Blues Club, it feels like one though. Stage, big TVs and tons of musician memorabilia.

The seafood prices are great and the Burger Menu.....OMG. The burgers are amazing. Perfectly cooked and FRESH lettuce and tomato......tomatoe? Where's Al Gore???

Onion Rings, and a pickle spear.

Super cool waitstaff and the drink options are endless.

The high top tables use palm tree trunks for legs.....too cool.

They have online ordering through google, and call to order by phone.

Great place for football games too. They have NFL Sunday Ticket, so every game on Sundays.

Take Out

The Flying Fish

(912)897-2009

I finally took a right at the lights on my way off Tybee. Been dying to check out the Flying Fish. Very fun casual atmosphere. A local favorite for Sunday Football as they have NFL Sunday Ticket.

I had just walked about 9 miles for a virtual charity I'm doing. Tried like crazy to hold out until I got home, but I could smell the food from the road.

Bacon Cheeseburger and a Braves game to the rescue. Nice charbroiled precisely cooled burger with FRESH sliced tomato, lettuce and onion. Fresh like the meaty center of the tomato, the onion ring was the exact diameter of the bun and the lettuce was from the center of the head.

The fries were perfect. Baked, not deep fried which I really liked.

Tons of amazing seafood on the menu as well.

For under $30 with a tip, this place is a HECK of a deal.

My glass was always full and so was my stomach. And as I slipped off the bar stool, the smile and verbal thank you filled my heart.

The Flying Fish,

Southern Hospitality at its best.

Tybee Yoga and Healing Arts

Heading out for a short walk early one morning, I couldn’t help but notice the sunrise aYoga gang on the beach.

I didn’t meet Laurie, I don’t even know her, but figured I’d throw this up on the blog for her. Yoga was one exercise that really helped me years ago with back issues.

Having it right here at my favorite beach I might have to give it a shot.

There are many picture perfect mornings on Tybee. It is a great way to combine nature, mind and soul.

Check out Tybee Yoga and Healing Arts and spend some time on yourself. We don’t do it enough.
