Charlie Shipway

Chilmark, MA

I met Charlie Shipway at his wedding on Martha's Vineyard. Some of gentlest, kindest most gracious people I have ever met were on that island.

We've remained friends ever since. Charlie is a believer in the impossible.

A doer, sailing the lakes of Connecticut and Martha's Vineyard as a young child.

He began racing sunfish at the age of 10 and bought his first sunfish when he turned 13. He immediately began competing.

Charlie ran the Chilmark Community Sailing Center from 1985 -1992

He taught Christopher Reeves sailing in the mid 1980s as well as founded the Aquinnah Sailing Program in 1993 and remains its present director.

Shipway is the Founder of The Martha's Vineyard High School Sailing Team and was their first coach from 1997 - 1998.

Shipway also crewed the winning vessel in the 1992 US Virgin Islands Olympic Trials.

Charlie brought his sailing talents over seas to Barcelona Spain and Competed in the 1992 Olympics.

He returned to the US in 1993 trained for and

campaigned for the US Olympic pre trials in 1995 and trials in 1996

In 2000 Charlie campaigned for the Olympics in Sydney, Austrailia and competed in their Olympic Trials.

In 2002 the Tornado and Catamaran worlds chose Edgartown, Massachusetts for which he registered and trained to compete in.

Between 1999 -and 2006 he was the Commodore of the Menemsha Pond Races, in Menemsha, Massachusetts.

From 2011 - Present he advocated the Hereshoff 12 1/2' Adaptive Sailing Team while remaining a Private Sailing Coach.

He has run countless Hereshoff 12 1/2 clinics.

2022 Season Champion Sunfish Menemsha Pond Races.

During the 2022 Sunfish Masters Captain Shipway finished 11th of 72 boats.... he finished with a broken tiller.

He is known to have shared a Podium with Walter Cronkite.

Aside from all that....he earned his Master Finished Carpenter in 2000 and is a Small boat restorer and commissioner.
