There are many choices when it comes to boating. Maybe you just moved here like I did. Maybe it's your first town/city within driving distance of more water than Starbucks Coffee shops(nearly a tie actually). You're thinking of buying, renting, or leasing?
Depends on the use.
If you use it once a year, rent it. If you live on the water buy it. If you live near the water or prefer multiple boats, lease it.
Below is a few ways to go in the Savannah, GA area.
What I want and what I'm doing differ greatly. I bought a 2004 Zodiac 18'. It needs everything. It has a seat and a steering wheel. It's a project boat called whistle. :) I'm doing this to learn and keep myself occupied. I picked it up for short money. I have a vision for it so it's gonna be really cool.
That being said, I'm joining Americas Boating Club. Boat not required. This chapter is located in Savannah. What an incredible resource. I can't wait to get started.
-education
-rules of the road
-equipment
-group sails
-free vessel safety checks
-conferences
-speakers, picnics, parties
-raftups
My ultimate combination would be to do both Freedom Boat Club for when I travel and Americas Boating Club for when I'm home. Right now, I'm dipping my toe into Americas Boating Club.
Freedom Boat Club It's not your typical club. It is the most widely available fractional boat ownership in the World.... I've seen ads for a chapter in New Zealand. Their buy in is very reasonable, as is their monthly fee.
Best part. You drive up to the marina, load your things into your boat, jump in and drive away...a day or few days at a time!!
Better than that, you bring it back all Sandy and covered in fish guts and spilled soda.....they clean it for you. They maintain the engines and electronics, they take care of insurance, registration, etc. AND they train you. Teach you how to use a boat safely.
Here's what I like about it. As a species fisherman, I can go to a place in Florida and fish Permit. I can stay here and catch redfish. I can go to Cape Cod and dive for lobsters, or fish for stripers and tuna and Bonito.....without pulling a boat. I can fly there actually.
So as a Freedom Boat Club Member, you can go anywhere they're located and fish. Plan ahead though. I think you can only do that like 4 times a year. But that's more than I can get time off for really.
Hilton Head has a place too. So you can just go there and get on the schedule.
